Peer Mentors are upper-class UCF Rosen College undergraduate students, who assist a group of their peers that may consist of At Risk, Readmission, and/or Probation students at UCF’s Rosen College.  The mentoring process provides these students with the information, support, and encouragement they need to be successful.  The goal of the POMP is to provide a support system by connecting UCF Rosen College students with peer mentors, who have demonstrated high scholastic standards, possess qualities that match the goals of the POMP, and are knowledgeable about UCF’s Rosen College.  Please note that peer mentor positions are strictly volunteer-based.

  • Develop improved communication and trouble-shooting skills, as well as gain an increased awareness of diversity

PEER MENTOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist mentees in establishing appropriate study skills/habits and enhance their time management skills
  • Orient mentees to university resources and UCF Rosen College services
  • Attend peer mentor orientation and complete online training modules
  • Attend training sessions provided by UCF staff
  • Attend POMP social activities and be an active member
  • Plan occasional activities with mentees (at least three per month)
  • Collaborate with mentee on an academic topic which includes inviting a guest speaker

PEER MENTOR QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledgeable about the UCF Rosen College community
  • Personable, flexible, and considerate of the needs of their peers
  • Possess and portray excellent communication, leadership, organization, and multi-tasking skills
  • Maintain at least a 3.0 UCF cumulative GPA
MEMBER REQUIREMENTS

  • Must attend one orientation session and at least two program meetings per month (approximately eight total each semester).
  • If a member has more than ONE unexcused absence, they may no longer be a part of POMP.
  • Maintain contact with mentor/mentee (MUST physically meet at least three times per month, four times is preferred).
  • Facilitate at least one academic topic at a program meeting.
  • Mentor/mentee will work together to: create an information piece, create a group activity for all the members to participate, invite a guest speaker from the hospitality industry.
  • Each paired Mentor/Mentee is required to attend one Volunteer Service event within the semester.

MENTOR OF THE YEAR AWARD

  • Dean Pizam is awarding the Mentor of the Year with a $1,000.00 prize during POMP’s Spring 2013 Ceremony
  • Qualifications for “Mentor of the Year” Award
    • A knowledgeable and experienced guide who teaches (and learns) through a commitment to the mutual growth of both mentee and mentor
    • A caring, thoughtful, and humane facilitator who provides access to people, places, experiences, and resources outside the mentee’s routine environment
    • A role model who exemplifies in word and deed what it means to be ethical, responsible, and a compassionate human being
    • A trusted ally, or advocate, who works with (not for) the mentee and on behalf of the mentee’s best interests and goals
    • A member that is active in the Program by attending and participating in bi-weekly meetings, training opportunities, social events, and motivates other members excited about the Program and involved on the Rosen and Main Campus as well as in the Community/Industry
    • Establishes regular interaction and consistent support with Mentee and/or other POMP members to build positive relationships built on trust and respect
    • Enhances mentee’s ability to interact comfortably and productively with people/groups from diverse racial, ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds
    • Exemplifies the mission and goals of the Peer Outreach Mentoring Program (POMP) and demonstrates going above and beyond to make the Program, as a whole, better
