Spring Research: Dick Pope Sr. Institute for Tourism Studies
During the spring 2019 semester at Rosen College of Hospitality Management, the Dick Pope Sr. Institute for Tourism Studies offered several Research Colloquiums and a presentation from its Research Scholar Series. UCF Rosen College/Dick Pope Sr. Institute for Tourism Studies Research Colloquium presentations are scheduled four times per semester on Friday afternoons, usually the first Friday of each month, and are open to all interested parties from academia, Industry, government, and the public. The January 2019 UCF Rosen College and the Dick Pope Sr. Institute for Tourism Studies Research Colloquium featured presentations by UCF Rosen College Ph.D. Students Gabriela Lelo de Larrea (“Hospitality Innovations and Firm Performance”) and Marco Nutta (“Too Much Information! Optimizing Hotel websites to Maximize Booking Intentions”). Both presentations featured insight into the respective ongoing research areas and work of each Ph.D. Student and were very well received by the Academics and Graduate Students in attendance.
COLLOQUIUM 3/19
March 2019’s UCF Rosen College and the Dick Pope Sr. Institute for Tourism Studies Research Colloquium was the first of two platforms for presentations by the winners of the UCF Rosen College’s Dean’s Research Scholar and Dean’s Research Cluster awards. These awards provide opportunities and resources for faculty to enable the development of multi-disciplinary projects and externally funded research proposals. The awards also provide invaluable experience in award management through the grant cycle.
The colloquium showcased UCF Rosen College’s widely varied spectrum of research interests. Dr. Kayode Aleshinloye presented “Resident’s Attitude to Tourism as a Precursor to Quality of Life: A Moderation Analysis” followed by Assistant Professor Dr. Jeannie Hahm, who presented her work “Past, Present and Future: The Golf Industry and Its Changing Patrons.”
In attendance in were UCF Rosen faculty and Leadership, members of the Orlando Tourism Industry, academics and leadership from UCF’s main campus, and Graduate students.

April 2019’s UCF Rosen College and the Dick Pope Sr. Institute for Tourism Studies Research Colloquium was the final colloquium of spring 2019, and the second of two platforms for presentations for the winners of the UCF Rosen College’s Dean’s Research Scholar and Dean’s Research Cluster awards. These awards were created to provide opportunities and resources for UCF Rosen College faculty to enable the development of multi-disciplinary projects and externally funded research proposals. The awards also provide invaluable experience to faculty in award management through the grant cycle.
The colloquium highlighted UCF Rosen College’s widely varied spectrum of research areas and interests. Drs. Tingting Zhang and Edwin Torres presented “Well on the Way: An Exploratory Study on Occupational Health in Hospitality.” Drs. Mehmet Altin and Fevzi Okumus presented their work “Risk Perception of Travelers Toward Turkey: And American Perspective.” Both presentations featured detailed Q&A/discussion periods for both presentations.
In attendance were representatives of the Orlando Tourism Industry, academics and leadership from UCF’s main campus, UCF Rosen faculty, Leadership, Graduate students and members of the public.

On Wednesday, April 17, 2019, UCF Rosen College and the Dick Pope Sr. Institute for Tourism Studies were honored to host a Research Presentation by the University of Toronto’s Dr. Cindy Chan. Dr. Chan’s presentation was entitled “Experiential vs. Material Purchases: Social Influences and Social Consequences.” This event was the final UCF Rosen College/Dick Pope Sr. Institute for Tourism Studies Research Colloquium of the Spring 2019 Semester.
The compelling presentation summarized the methodology, findings, and implications of three studies and the subsequent papers published in peer-reviewed journals by Dr. Chan and her collaborators. The outstanding presentation was followed by an extensive and engaging Q&A session with the faculty, graduate students, leadership, and industry professionals in attendance.
Dr. Cindy Chan is an Assistant Professor of Marketing in the UTSC Department of Management and Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto. Her research focuses on social relationships—examining the role of experiences, emotions, and gifts in shaping relationships and consumer behavior. She earned her Ph.D. in Marketing from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Chan has published her research in the Journal of Consumer Research and the Journal of Consumer Psychology, and she is a recipient of the Robert Ferber Award from the Journal of Consumer Research and the C.W. Park Best Paper Award from the Journal of Consumer Psychology. Her research findings have also been featured in popular press outlets including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, NPR, The Globe and Mail, and Scientific American.
UCF Rosen College/Dick Pope Sr. Institute for Tourism Studies Research Scholar Series presentations host scholars who are engaged in relevant and innovative Hospitality, Tourism, and other related and relevant multi-disciplinary research areas. The events are open to all interested parties from academia, Industry, government, and the public.
