Rosen Knight Highlight: From London to Okinawa – how Zykeria Rolle’s experiences studying abroad shaped her entertainment management studies
ORLANDO, FL – Zykeria Rolle has always had a passion for the arts. Growing up in the cultural hotbed of Miami, she found a home in the city’s vibrant art scene and had a particular fondness for the management aspect of film. Looking to translate her passion into a career, she researched colleges that would allow her to study entertainment management.
This led her to discovering Rosen College’s robust entertainment management undergraduate degree program. “[It was exactly what I wanted out of a degree – it has all the classes I wanted to study and very diverse programs.” Rolle cites entertainment law and entertainment technology as her favorite classes so far in the degree program.
Looking to further explore the film side of entertainment, she started looking for more opportunities to get hands-on experience outside of her typical class schedule. And what she found was right at her doorstep: Rosen College’s study abroad program in London with the National Film & Television School.
Rolle says she had a great experience studying abroad in London because of how many hands-on opportunities there were. “I got to make a short film, speak to world-class film instructors, attend numerous workshops and master classes, and travel to different entertainment spaces like theaters and production studios all across the city,” she says. “It opened my eyes to how vast the film industry is, especially outside the usual film hotspots of Los Angeles and Atlanta.”
But her international experiences didn’t stop there. After her experience in London, Rolle applied for an internship at the Kafuu Resort Fuchaku Condo Hotel in Okinawa, Japan, and to her delight, was accepted. While there, she was able to learn firsthand about hospitality in Japan and got to connect with other interns from all around the world. “In Japan, I was totally immersed in a new culture,” Rolle says. “It taught me a lot about independence and gaining the courage to try new things and make new connections.”
While she was in Japan, she took a leap of faith and applied for a production internship for the Ryan Seacrest Foundation. After completing her interview at midnight Japan Standard time – 11 a.m. EST for the interviewers back in America – Rolle was accepted and began her internship this past August.
Stationed at the Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children, her internship allows her to brighten kids’ days by producing content for the hospital’s closed circuit television channel. “I really like doing the technical management of the morning show,” Rolle says. “I have a lot of fun using the soundboard and video switching.” She credits these experiences and working with the show’s guest stars like – Olympian Noah Lyles – for furthering her experience with technical aspects of film production and talent management.
Rolle’s ultimate goal? To become a producer on The Amazing Race. “My dream career would combine traveling, producing a show, and handling talent and contracts,” she says. With her adventurous spirit and commitment to hard work, the sky’s the limit.
