With iconic film studios, historic theatres and productions recognized around the world, London remains one of the entertainment industry’s most influential cities. This summer, UCF Rosen College of Hospitality Management students traveled across the pond for an immersive study abroad experience at the National Film and Television School (NFTS), gaining firsthand insight into the creative process and the many careers that bring productions to life.
Through the two-week Exploring the Entertainment Industry program, students learned from directors, production professionals, editors, actors and other industry experts while exploring some of London’s most iconic entertainment destinations. The experience combined hands-on filmmaking, industry masterclasses and behind-the-scenes access to film studios, theatres and production spaces, allowing students to see the entertainment industry from both a creative and business perspective.
The program immersed students in every stage of the filmmaking process through hands-on instruction in cinematography, directing, sound, acting and editing. Working alongside classmates and industry professionals, students experienced the collaboration and problem-solving required to bring a production from an idea to the screen.
At the end of the program, students had the opportunity to see their completed projects premiere on the big screen, creating a memorable conclusion to their filmmaking experience.
Beyond the production experience, students explored the entertainment industry from multiple angles through visits to some of London’s most recognizable locations. The group toured Pinewood Studios, visited BBC facilities and experienced the West End through performances of Hamilton, Hercules and Stranger Things: The First Shadow. Students also received a backstage tour of Theatre Royal Drury Lane and visited Shakespeare’s Globe, where they experienced the history and creativity that continue to shape London’s theatre scene.
For senior entertainment management major Regan Gatz, those experiences connected her classroom education with the industry she will join. As someone passionate about live theatre, seeing productions from the audience perspective while also learning what happens behind the scenes reinforced her desire to help create those experiences for others.
“Getting to experience these shows reminded me of why I pursued my degree in entertainment management in the first place: to have the opportunity to create this magic on stage,” Gatz said.
The program also introduced students to the business side of entertainment through masterclasses focused on producing, casting, virtual production, the economics of filming in London and the future of film and television. By hearing directly from professionals working in the industry, students gained a better understanding of the wide range of roles involved in entertainment and how different teams collaborate to bring productions to life.
The combination of hands-on production work, industry access and professional mentorship gave students a broader perspective on the many opportunities available across film, television and live entertainment while helping them better understand where their own interests fit within the industry.
For event management major Bella Ressman, the experience challenged her creativity and expanded her technical skill set. Creating a short film in just two weeks challenged students to collaborate, adapt and apply new skills in a fast-paced environment while building connections with peers and professionals from around the world.
“During my time in the program, I gained hands-on experience in various aspects of film and television production, including directing, cinematography, sound mixing, production design and video production,” Ressman said. “Beyond the technical experience, this program allowed me to build meaningful connections, immerse myself in a new culture and grow both personally and professionally.”
As students returned to Orlando, they brought back more than memories of London’s studios, stages and landmarks. The experience gave them a broader understanding of the global entertainment industry, new skills to apply in their careers and a closer look at the opportunities available within film, television and live entertainment.
