Study Abroad Process
The Study Abroad experience can be broken down into four essential phases, guiding you from planning to completion:
Self-Assessment and Application
Before diving into the application process, we recommend performing a self-assessment. This involves:
- Meeting with Your Academic Advisor: Determine which remaining coursework can be taken abroad.
- Financial Planning: Review your financial resources and assess your financial aid eligibility using our Budget Sheet.
- Program Fit: Consider the program’s duration and location to find the best match for your academic and personal goals.
Once your self-assessment is complete, schedule an advising appointment and attend a Study Abroad 101 session to familiarize yourself with the process. Afterward, you’ll complete the application with guidance from the Study Abroad advisor.
Pre-Departure and Preparation
After acceptance into your chosen program, you’ll finalize logistics, including travel arrangements and any necessary documentation. At this stage, you’ll:
- Be accepted by the host institution.
- Formalize your academic schedule before departure, ensuring that any adjustments are approved by your academic advisor.
- Connect with other UCF students going abroad.
This phase is about ensuring that all your travel, academic, and financial plans are fully in place for a smooth transition abroad.
Study Abroad Experience
This is the heart of your Study Abroad journey! During this phase, you’ll immerse yourself in your new academic and cultural environment. You’ll balance coursework, travel, and social activities while gaining invaluable international exposure. Although communication with UCF will be minimal, you’ll have the support of your advisors and peers throughout the process. Focus on making the most of your experience, both academically and culturally.
Return and Post-Experience Debrief
As your time abroad concludes, you’ll prepare for your return semester. This includes:
- Enrolling in your return courses while still abroad.
- Meeting with your academic advisor to ensure a smooth academic transition back to UCF.
Upon returning, participate in a debrief meeting to discuss your experience, offer feedback, and provide insights for future students. You may also be invited to share your story and help inspire the next group of Study Abroad participants.
Minimum Eligibility Criteria
These are the general eligibility criteria for Rosen College Exchange programs. Faculty-led and UCF Center programs typically have different criteria; be sure to check the program pages linked below for specific program information.
- UCF GPA: 3.00 cumulative or higher.
- Must be a declared major in hospitality, event management, or a related field by time of participation.
- Must be in good standing (academic, conduct, and financial) with UCF.
Rosen College Exchanges
At Rosen College, our exchange programs provide students with exciting opportunities to study abroad while earning credit. Programs change based on agreements, and recommended majors may vary depending on institutional offerings. Explore the different program types below for more details.
Reciprocal Exchange Agreements
Generally referred to as Exchanges, these allow students to access their financial aid through paying only UCF Tuition while attending a university abroad. Exchange programs are developed through formal agreements, have strong curriculum offerings, and are usually full semester (fall or spring).
