Webinar #1

UCF Rosen College of Hospitality Management’s Dick Pope Sr. Institute for Tourism Studies conducted a study explicitly tailored to understand the economic impact and coronavirus COVID-19 related challenges faced by small, independent Florida hotels, and bed and breakfasts.

This study has three pivotal goals:

  1. Quantify the economic contributions of small, independent Florida hotels (including their direct and indirect impacts) on Florida’s economy. This data will show how valuable these businesses are to their communities and the State of Florida;
  2. Quantify the impact of the COVID-19 epidemic on the operations and finances of these businesses; and
  3. Provide recommendations to small lodging properties to aid in their recovery

From that study a webinar series was developed to share information with our industry partners. The webinar series provides strategic business information to prepare and support business leaders for the post Covid-19 world. The series discuss different post Covid-19 scenarios, sharing current research-based information and perspectives, which could potentially impact businesses.

This study is unique because it will show the value of small, independent lodgings to Florida’s economy and community.

Based on this study’s findings, the Institute estimated the impact of the coronavirus COVID-19 related challenges facing by the vacation home industry in Florida.

This study has three pivotal goals:

  1. Quantify the economic contributions of the vacation home rentals industry (including their direct, indirect and induced impacts) on Florida’s economy. This data will show how valuable this industry is to their communities and the State of Florida;
  2. Quantify the impact of the COVID-19 epidemic on the operations of the industry and the State of Florida; and
  3. Provide recommendations to assist in the industry’s recovery

From that study, a webinar series was developed to share information with our industry partners. Data collection was done across the country and completed in the last week of May 2020. The findings provide insights about the travel desire of US travelers in the next twelve months.

This study has three pivotal goals:
1. Determine the travel desire and preferences of US travelers in the next twelve months;
2. Rank these travel preferences; and
3. Provide recommendations to assist in the industry’s recovery

The Institute will share this information with our industry partners in our next industry webinar. This industry webinar discusses differences among US regions travel intentions, demographic purpose of visits, and drivers of travel intentions. Webinar #4

Researchers from UCF’s Department of Psychology and Rosen College of Hospitality Management conducted a survey of 1,000+ hospitality workers who were recently furloughed or let go about their perceptions on the communication process from their organization, and their intentions to return to the industry and former employers. This study was supported by grant number T42OH008438, funded by the National Institute Occupational Safety (NIOSH) and Health under the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

In addition to discussing the above, early findings from other hospitality-related collaborative projects under this research umbrella will be shared in this webinar. The presentation will close by discussing benefits of industry-academia partnerships for managing the unique and unprecedented challenges of COVID-19.

A Clearinghouse of Covid-19 Resources

Dr. Deborah Breiter, and Dr. Cynthia Mejia collaborated with Dr. Mindy Shoss and Dr. Kristin Horan from UCF’s Targeted Research Training Program (TRT), through the UCF College of Sciences Department of Psychology. Core TRT faculty and students created a website, featuring a variety of resources for those hospitality workers affected by Covid-19. The project is funded through a grant received through National Institute for Occupational Safety (NIOSH/ERC).  Learn more HERE.  To find out more about the resources made possible through the grant visit the clearinghouse of information website.
